A calmer way to connect on public Wi-Fi

Five useful habits for cafes, airports and everything in between.

Protected devices connected through an encrypted network

Check the network name

Confirm the Wi-Fi name with the venue before connecting. Avoid joining a network simply because it looks familiar. Turn off automatic joining for public networks you no longer use.

Keep HTTPS enabled

Look for the secure connection indicator in your browser. A VPN complements HTTPS, but it does not make a deceptive website trustworthy. Do not dismiss certificate warnings just to reach a page.

Connect before sensitive activity

Where permitted, establish your VPN connection before working with personal information on a shared network. Confirm the application is connected and review the selected location.

Protect the device too

Install operating-system updates, enable a screen lock and use multi-factor authentication. Turn off sharing services you do not need on public networks.

Leave the network cleanly

Disconnect and forget a temporary network when you leave. If something feels wrong, stop and use a connection you trust, such as your own mobile hotspot.
